An uchikake is a full-length outer robe which, until the Edo Period (1608~1867), was only worn by women of Samurai or noble families on special occasions. Since then, it has become a part of a Traditional Japanese Bridal Costume. Now it is only used for a wedding ceremony.
The majority of traditional uchikake (colourful wedding kimono) used in Japan are an orange-red colour (Shuiro) which was historically believed to ward off evil spirits.
Just about all uchikake have a heavily padded lower hemline.
