A kakejiku is a Japanese scroll painting or calligraphy mounted with brocade fabric or paper edges on paper backing, so that it can easily be rolled up and stored.

It is traditionally displayed in the tokonoma alcove of a room especially designed for the display of prized objects. When displayed in a chashitsu, orteahouse for the tea ceremony, the choice of a scroll and its complimentary ikebana (flower arrangement) help to set the spiritual mood of the ceremony.

In contrast to the folding screens or wall paintings, scrolls can be easily and quickly changed to match the season or occasion.
