Transoms - Ranma
Ranma were built into a house in between rooms above the doors. This allowed air to flow between rooms. Ranma are always double-sided and are usually intricately carved using Japanese Cedar (Sugi). They are almost always framed so require little post-purchase costs. Ranma are still being made today and can cost well over $1000 per piece. They are often made in pairs but never with the same image. Most of our ranma are ca. 1890 ~ 1940. Prices vary depending on the intricacy of the carving and the thickness of the cedar.
Ideas for use include; bed-heads, wall-hangings, table-tops or use them as transoms if building into your house or patio.
