Staircase (Step) Chests - Kaidan dansu
Japanese step chests (Kaidan dansu) were invented around the same time as the kitchen chests (mizuya). Some people mistakenly think these were built to go under a staircase. That is wrong because these are the stairs with built-in storage. There are no double-sided kaidan dansu. They are a modern day reproduction so please be wary of people selling "authentic double-sided antique" step chests.
These are the pinnacle of Japanese tansu collections and can still be used as steps provided they are in good condition.
