Uchikake: The Traditional Japanese Bridal Robe

The Uchikake is a stunning, full-length outer robe that forms the centrepiece of a traditional Japanese bridal costume. Historically, up until the Edo Period (1608–1867), the Uchikake was reserved for women of Samurai or noble families for special occasions. Today, this exquisite garment is used exclusively for the wedding ceremony.

These kimono are instantly recognizable by their heavily padded lower hemline and their striking colours; the majority of traditional Uchikake are an orange-red shade called Shuiro, which was historically believed to ward off evil spirits.
