Antique and Contemporary Japanese Hanging Scrolls (Kakejiku)

A Kakejiku is a traditional Japanese hanging scroll—a painting or calligraphy mounted with brocade fabric or paper edges on a paper backing. This design allows the artwork to be easily rolled up and stored when not on display.

Our selection includes both antique and contemporary pieces. Kakejiku are traditionally displayed in the tokonoma alcove of a room, a space especially designed for the presentation of prized artefacts. When shown in a chashitsu (teahouse) for the tea ceremony, the selection of the scroll and its complementary ikebana (flower arrangement) help to set the spiritual mood of the ceremony.

In contrast to folding screens or wall paintings, scrolls can be easily and quickly changed to match the season or occasion. This makes Kakejiku versatile and highly prized decorative items for any interior.
