Authentic Japanese Obi: Silk Art for Decor
The Obi (Kimono Sash) is one of the most versatile pieces of Japanese textile art, easily repurposed into stunning home décor. These luxurious silks can be used as table runners, wall hangings, cushion covers, or draped over chests and curtain rods. We import authentic, high-quality silk Obi ranging from contemporary pieces to rare Meiji Period collector items.
Our prices typically range from $60 to $300 for top-of-the-range pieces. We also sell smaller Obi pieces (not listed on the website) starting from $10, ideal for runners or place mats.
🧵 The Three Main Types of Obi
The Maru Obi is the most formal and expensive Obi, characterized by both sides being fully patterned along its length, usually with ornately designed silk brocade or tapestry and often lavishly decorated with gold thread. Popular during the Meiji and Taisho eras (1868-1926), this heavy Obi is the most versatile for decorating. It makes fabulous runners and wall hangings, and can be unpicked along the seam to create a continuous pattern of double the width.
The Fukuro Obi is less formal and was created in the Showa Period (late 1920s). It is made with fine brocade or tapestry, patterned along at least 60% of its length on one side. The plain lining makes it less bulky and expensive than the Maru Obi. When worn, it can hardly be distinguished from a Maru Obi and is commonly used for formal occasions today.
Nagoya Obi were First produced in Nagoya at the end of the Taisho era (1912-26), the Nagoya Obi is lighter, cheaper, and easier to wear. It is characterized by a large portion of the Obi being folded and stitched in half. Similar to other types, the narrow portion can be unpicked and opened to reveal the entire pattern, making it adaptable for use as runners.
