Framed Kasamatsu's Spring on the Moat
Shiro Kasamatsu was born in Tokyo in 1898. At the age of 13, he entered the painting school of Kaburagi Kiyokata, a renowned master in traditional Japanese painting and printmaking. Kasamatsu was exceptionally talented; from a young age, his paintings were featured in various prestigious exhibitions. This piece, "Spring on the Moat" (Ohori no Haru), showcases the mastery of composition and atmosphere he developed under Kiyokata's tutelage. The scene depicts three swans gliding through tranquil waters, framed by the delicate, sweeping branches of a willow tree in spring. The print features high-quality technical details, including the "gei" watermark and expert embossing characteristic of the Unsodo publishing house, making it a superb example of mid-century Showa period woodblock art.
