Japanese Book Chest (Honbako) - FT03
This Honbako (Book Chest) is a compact, beautifully preserved antique dating to the ca. 1930s. This style of chest was typically used for storing ledgers, documents, or valuables in a private room. Its clean, minimalist aesthetic suggests it was highly valued in the Kyoto region.
Construction and Design
The entire chest is crafted using Sōgiri (All-Paulownia) construction. Paulownia (Kiri) wood is the traditional material for fine storage, prized for its natural ability to regulate humidity and protect contents from insects.
The layout is highly practical, featuring a large, secure compartment accessed by a Kendon-buta (drop-fit door) above two deep, full-width drawers. The Kendon-buta panel lifts out completely to reveal the interior storage, offering a seamless front when closed. Simple, elegant brass hardware complements the light, natural tone of the Kiri wood.
This charming and functional chest is the perfect size for use as a bedside table, an end table, or specialist storage for a collection.
