Vintage Japanese Fisherman's Flag (Tairyō-bata) | Ship Launch Commemoration

This colourful, vintage Tairyō-bata (大漁旗), or "big catch flag," is a significant piece of Japanese maritime folk artefact, dating from the ca. 1950s–1970s. Traditionally hand-painted and displayed by fishing boats, the Tairyō-bata (or Kamban) is flown to signal a great haul or, as in this case, to celebrate the launch of a brand-new vessel.

Provenance and Design

This particular flag was created to commemorate the launch of a new fishing vessel for Captain Sōka Tokujirō. The bold design features a dynamic, diagonal layout in contrasting colours—green, yellow, and burgundy—which are typical of the bright, high-visibility aesthetic needed at sea.

The central kanji calligraphy reads "進水" (Ship Launching/Entering the Water), and the red characters "祝" signify "Celebration." Tairyō-bata frequently employ auspicious motifs (such as sea creatures or Mount Fuji), and their bold designs, often created using the traditional tsutsugaki dyeing technique, transmit the spirit and ambition of the fishermen. Its large size (197 x 144cm) makes it a dramatic, vibrant display piece.
