Nippon Cotton Mill (c. 1912–1921)
This historical sign for Nippon Cotton Mill (Nippon Bōseki K.K., Osaka) documents Japan’s rise as a global textile powerhouse. It advertises advanced "Gas Spun Yarn," indicating modern, high-quality manufacturing for export. Crucially, the use of "NIPPON" in the English title provides a rare, narrow dating window, confirming its production during the Taishō Period, just before the 1921 US trade rule mandated "Japan" on imports. The functional, painted-board construction (confirmed by the reverse image) and stylised avian motif reflect a focus on mass industrial branding. This artifact is a unique, chronologically significant piece from the foundation of Japan’s industrial economy.
