Hōmei-maru Pharmaceutical (c. 1900–1915)

This rare, impressive Japanese kamban advertises Hōmei-maru ("Life-Preserving Pill"), a revered pediatric remedy (Wakan medicine) for infantile convulsions (Gokanmushi) with roots dating to 1598. Crafted from heavy, carved wood with rich gold leaf and a hand-painted centre logo, this sign exudes institutional prestige. The robust, framed structure confirmed by the reverse side indicates a significant investment as a permanent marker for the manufacturer, Nomura Chikyūken of Kyoto. Dating to the Late Meiji to Early Taishō Period, it is a magnificent example of high-status traditional commercial art, reflecting the vital role of Kampo medicine during Japan’s modernising economy. A superb collector’s piece from a long-standing pharmacy.
