This Salt Sign (塩 - Shio) is on a thick wooden board. This was common for shop signs (kamban) from the mid-20th century, before plastic and metal signs became dominant.
The general wear and oxidation suggest significant age. The rustic, simple nature of this piece and excellent calligraphy and no major damage makes it desirable as a folk-art (mingei) object
