Okitsu: Okitsu River (Stock# AV03)

A classic scene from the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, Okitsu (Station No. 18) depicts a river crossing during the Edo period. The artwork famously features two sumo wrestlers being carried across the Okitsu River—one seated atop a packhorse and the other carried in a small kago (palanquin). This Shōwa-era woodblock print beautifully preserves the crisp lines and traditional colour palette of Hiroshige’s original vision, illustrating the unique modes of transport used by travellers of high status in feudal Japan.
