Japanese Lacquered Sugi Isho-dansu

This elegant single-section clothing chest originates from the Ōmi region near Lake Biwa. Built from lacquered Sugi (Japanese Cedar), it features five full-width drawers that offer a balanced, symmetrical profile. Each drawer is fitted with a large, hand-forged circular iron lock plate and traditional "warabite" handles. Typical of the understated merchant style of Shiga, this piece focuses on clean lines and robust ironwork rather than the flamboyant decoration of northern cabinetry.
