Japanese Transoms (Ranma): Antique Carved Architectural Panels
Transoms (Ranma) are exquisite, double-sided wooden panels that were traditionally built into Japanese homes above doors to allow for essential air flow between rooms. They provide a beautiful decorative element while performing a practical function.
Our collection features authentic antique Ranma, mostly dating ca. 1890 ~ 1940. They are intricately carved using high-quality Japanese Cedar (Sugi), and while often made in pairs, they never feature the same image.
Ranma are almost always framed, which means they require little post-purchase costs. Prices vary based on the intricacy of the carving and the thickness of the cedar.
Ideas for use include: bed-heads, wall-hangings, table-tops, or use them as transoms if building into your house or patio. New Ranma can cost well over $1000 per piece.
