Tatami are traditional Japanese floor mats made from rice straw and a woven sea rush (igusa) surface bordered by brocade or plain cloth.
Dimensions and Use
- Our standard full mats measure 180 x 90 x 5cm.
- Japanese room sizes are typically measured by the number of tatami mats. (e.g. a traditional tea room is 4½ mats).
- For a flush finish in non-standard rooms, mats can be placed centrally surrounded by floating floorboards, or in any location with one of our wooden frames
- We can supply custom-made mats to whatever size or shape you require.
- We also supply bed-sized tatami to complement our Japanese futons.
Quality and Compliance
- All materials are cleaned and disinfected without harmful chemicals, meeting strict Domestic & International standards.
- Sourced from Kumamoto (South-west Japan).
- The straw is oven-dried at 85 C for 8 hours to denature seeds/pathogens. This complies with Quarantine's import regulations and requires no further treatment (fumigation). An essential difference between Japanese straw and cheap Asian straw is that, in Japan, it is illegal to use untreated human waste to fertilise food crops.
- Our suppliers modernised kiln reduces water content from 15% - 10%, making the mats more mould resistant and lighter without compromising quality.

Size Variation
Since tatami is a natural product, mats may shrink or expand slightly with humidity. Please allow for a minor dimensional variation of +/- 5mm when ordering.
