The Kaidan Tansu (Stair Chests) are often considered the pinnacle of Japanese Tansu collections. Invented around the same time as the Mizuya (kitchen chests), these unique Japanese antique furniture pieces are not just cabinets built to fit under a staircase—they are the steps themselves, with built-in storage drawers and cupboards.

Authentic Kaidan Tansu offer both beauty and function, and can still be used as steps today, provided they are in good condition. A warning to buyers: There are no double-sided antique Kaidan Tansu. Pieces sold as "authentic double-sided antique" step chests are always modern-day reproductions.
