Late Edo/Early Meiji Period Gifu Merchant's Chōba-Dansu - FR04

This striking Antique Japanese Merchant’s Chōba-Dansu (Shop Chest) dates to the Late Edo/Early Meiji Period (circa 1870). Originating from the Gifu Region, this Tansu (chest) was essential for securing documents, ledgers, and valuables in a merchant's chōba (office). The Gifu style is often defined by its compact, squared-off construction and minimal use of large ornamental ironwork, focusing instead on robust, practical design.

Structural Design & Materials

This Tansu (chest) is built for exceptional durability and features a harmonious combination of two highly valued woods.

Constructed from a blend of Sugi (Japanese Cedar) for the frame and Hinoki (Cypress) for the drawer fronts, the piece showcases a beautiful, natural wood finish that has developed a rich, aged patina with deep honey-brown tones. The layout is balanced and practical, featuring a combination of large and small drawers for versatile storage, and a dedicated, secure lockbox for documents and currency.

The substantial Kanagu (iron metalwork) is strong and minimalist. It features heavy Kaku-Te (Square Pull Handles) on all drawers. The lockbox (safe area) is secured by a Katabiraki-Do (single-hinged door) and, along with the large drawers, is secured by stylised key plates (jōmae-za). The security is further enhanced by the integrated vertical Sashibō (locking bar) designed to secure the lower recessed drawers. Completing the functionality are the heavy, recessed carrying handles (Sashigane) on the sides for ease of transport.
