Kyoto Tea Preparation Chest (Mizuya-Dansu), Shōwa Period (ca. 1960s)
This authentic single-piece chest is a compact Kyoto Tea Preparation Chest (Mizuya-Dansu) from the Shōwa Period (ca. 1960s), designed specifically for the adjacent preparation area in the practice of Chadō (The Way of Tea). Crafted from lightweight Japanese Cedar (Sugi) with a distinctive Bamboo (Take) facade, its design reflects an unparalleled dedication to the ritual.
Unique Function and Material
The Upper Tier is the essential water preparation area (mizuya), featuring a dedicated bamboo drainboard that sits above a fully lined copper drawer. This crucial system was designed to capture and contain all spilt water during the washing and preparation of tea utensils, thereby protecting the wood and confirming its authentic, intended use. Its function is further highlighted by the inclusion of original fitted hooks on the side for hanging the hishaku (ladle).
