This imposing Edo Period stacking chest from the Kanto region, circa 1860, is an authoritative antique with proven historical prestige. Known as a Kannon Biraki Isho Dansu, this style of clothing chest was influential in regional design.
Historical Status: The deep, opaque lacquer finish is a crucial historical marker: in the Edo period, this dark finish signaled a wealthy, high-status household. The aesthetic embodied the Edo ideal of being sturdy, secure, and referred to as iki (chic).
Kanagu & Construction: The Kiri wood structure features dramatic iron Kanagu (metalwork). The double-hinged Kannon Biraki doors are secured by a substantial, central Mokko Lock Plate. Heavy Warabite handles are fitted to the lower drawers, underscoring the chest's uncompromising construction.
