Vintage Japanese Leather Travel Trunk - OU02
This classic Antique Japanese Travel Trunk dates to the Late Taishō/Early Shōwa Period (circa 1920–1935). This style of sturdy, rectangular luggage was essential for both military and civilian transport during the early 20th century. While it is not a traditional Tansu, it is a genuine piece of Japanese travel heritage.
Features
The trunk is built over a lightweight fibreboard core, wrapped in durable, patinated leather. Its structural integrity is provided by thick, riveted leather strapping and corner guards, complemented by iron clasps and sturdy side handles.
The exterior tells a compelling story of its travels, retaining its original check-in stickers (including one from the Tsingtao Hotel), which confirm the trunk was checked into a hotel in Manchuria (Manchukuo). This detail firmly anchors the piece in the historical context of early Shōwa Japanese expansion and global travel. Furthermore, the trunk features hand-painted Japanese characters on the front: which most likely indicate the owner's surname, 瀧野 (Takino).
The interior is finished with a fabric lining and features original leather straps to secure the contents, as well as a practical document pocket set into the inside lid.
This trunk is an ideal decorative feature, providing unique storage as a feature piece or display cabinet, bringing a tangible sense of history to a contemporary space.
