Vintage Japanese Trunk - Matsuzakaya Brand - OU01
This large Antique Japanese Travel Trunk, likely dating to the Early Shōwa Period (circa 1930s), is an authentic piece of Japanese travel history. This heavy-duty model was supplied by the prestigious Matsuzakaya Department Store, a name synonymous with quality and enduring luxury goods in Japan.
Construction and Provenance
This trunk is built for robust travel with a classic layered construction. It features a strong wooden box core, which is entirely clad in a thin sheet metal (likely steel) and finished in a deep, dark blue paint. Its durability is enhanced by the thick, horizontal wooden slats that run around the exterior, designed to protect the metal from scuffing and impact, alongside heavy-duty, riveted metal corners and reinforcements. The original brass latches and hardware are sturdy and functional.
Matsuzakaya Heritage: Founded in 1611 as a kimono store, by the 1930s, Matsuzakaya had evolved into a high-end department store, positioning this trunk as a luxury item for cosmopolitan travellers of the Shōwa era.
The interior is lined with a vibrant blue and tan striped fabric (likely cotton or linen), providing a classic, well-protected space for clothing or textiles. A small, original wooden stay holds the lid open for easy access. The presence of the Matsuzakaya branding confirms its high-quality origin and commercial heritage.
This is a statement piece perfect for use as a unique coffee table or large decorative storage trunk in a living room, bedroom, or retail display.
