Temoto dansu (Handy Chest) - FT62
This elegant Temoto dansu (Handy Chest) is a contemporary example of traditional Japanese storage craft, dating to around 1980. The term temoto refers to something kept close at hand, meaning this chest was designed for accessible, everyday storage.
Design and Construction
Crafted entirely from light, fine-grained Paulownia wood (kiri), this chest showcases a clean, functional aesthetic. Paulownia is prized for its ability to regulate moisture, making it ideal for protecting valuable contents. The tansu features a large vertical compartment concealed by a single hinged door, and a single, shallow drawer beneath. The practical, elongated dimensions and vertical space suggest it was used for storing hanging scrolls (kakejiku) or long documents. The chest is accented with simple, minimalist black iron hardware.
This Handy Chest combines traditional materials with functionality, making it a versatile piece suitable for modern or traditional interiors.
