Antique Japanese Sea Chest (Funa Dansu) or Strongbox (Chōbako), ca. 1915
This exceptionally compact and heavily secured antique is a Funa Dansu (Sea Chest) that also fits the description of a Chōbako (Document Box or Strongbox). Dating to the Taishō Period (circa 1915), this piece represents the pinnacle of security and craftsmanship designed for Japan's wealthy merchant class.
Originally, this type of chest served a dual purpose: it was used by merchants to secure valuables, currency, and vital ledgers—either for safe keeping during perilous travel (particularly on ships, hence the Funa Dansu name) or within the merchant's main office (chōba) where records were stored. Its robust, almost militaristic design makes it a powerful example of functional security design.
Uncompromising Security and Metalwork (Kanagu)
The construction of this chest is entirely defined by its need for uncompromising security. This is demonstrated by the extensive, heavy iron Kanagu (metalwork) that entirely reinforces the chest, making it highly resistant to theft and damage.
Key protective and functional features include:
Substantial Iron Strapping around the entire wooden frame, securing the joints and preventing impact damage.
A massive, highly prominent circular lock plate on the hinged door, secured by a complex internal locking mechanism.
Heavy-duty corner guards and sturdy iron hinges ensure the structural integrity of the box remains intact under stress.
Prominent, fixed side carrying handles confirm its design for portability and rapid movement in an emergency.
Paulownia (Kiri) Construction
Despite its tough exterior, this piece is constructed from traditional Paulownia (Kiri) wood, which is the standard material for fine Japanese storage. Paulownia wood is naturally lightweight and is highly prized for its unique properties that aid in preservation: it is resistant to moisture, humidity, and insects, making it the perfect inner shell to protect valuable paper documents and currency. The dark, aged patina of the Kiri wood provides a striking contrast against the pale interior and the intense black of the iron fittings.
The interior, accessed via the heavily reinforced hinged door, offers secure, deep storage space. This chest is an exceptional feature piece, perfect for storing valuables, jewellery, or acting as a highly decorative display item on a desk, credenza, or mantlepiece, bringing genuine historical character to any space.
