Antique Zeni-bako (Strongbox/Coin Box) - FU27

This robust Zeni-bako (money box or strongbox) is a highly functional piece of Japanese folk furniture, dating to the Mid-Meiji Period (ca. 1880). Designed for security and portability, these chests were essential for travelling merchants, shopkeepers, or wealthy families for safeguarding currency, documents, and valuables.

Construction and Features

The box is constructed from solid, dark-stained Japanese Cedar (Sugi) wood, ensuring a durable and weighty casing. Security is paramount, with the sides reinforced by numerous large, dome-headed iron rivets/studs for structural integrity. The hinged, two-part lid is secured by a substantial iron hasp and a heavy, functioning antique padlock. The lid facilitates deposits through two openings: a long, narrow slit for quickly depositing folded documents, receipts, or small gold/silver valuables, and a circular hole for dropping in coins. The lid opens fully, allowing unobstructed access to the large, deep single internal compartment.

The simple, powerful aesthetic and deep patina of this Zeni-bako make it a unique antique display piece.
