Iconic Japanese Garden Ornament

Acquire an exceptional piece of Japanese garden history with this large, genuine antique granite Yukimi dōrō (Snow-Viewing Lantern). Dating from around 1900 (Meiji period), this is a classic and highly prized style of lantern renowned for its wide, distinctive cap (kasa).

The Yukimi dōrō is traditionally placed near water—ponds, streams, or tsukubai basins—where its broad, low cap is designed to collect snow, creating a stunning winter silhouette. In the sunny Gold Coast or Australia, it offers an equally captivating presence, its low height and stable form making it ideal for positioning near a water feature or as a grounding element in a rock garden.

This piece is particularly rare as the octagonal light chamber (hibukuro) still features the original, small, wooden window frames fitted with frosted glass. The survival of this delicate element is exceptional for a piece of this age. Additionally, the lantern has a drilled-out core for the effortless and discreet addition of modern electrical lighting, combining authentic antiquity with contemporary convenience.

The granite exhibits a wonderfully rich, century-old patina, showcasing the weathering and character that can only be achieved through genuine age and exposure.
