An Exceptional Piece of Imperial-Era History: Kabuto Beer Purveyor Kamban

This original wooden kamban (signboard) for Kabuto Beer is an artefact of profound historical rarity, dating from the late Meiji and early Taishō periods (c. 1900–1912). It was produced by the pioneering Marusan Brewing Company (active 1898–1921) during its golden age, making it a highly desirable piece of Japanese industrial ephemera.

Status Confirmed: Purveyor to the Imperial Household

The sign’s prestige is secured by the inscription at the top: '宮内省御用達' (Kunaishō Goyōtatsu), meaning Purveyor to the Imperial Household Ministry. This coveted designation, awarded to companies providing goods of the highest quality to the Imperial Family, was a powerful status symbol. The brewery commissioned this high-quality sign following its international success, which included a Gold Medal win at the 1900 Paris Expo.

Craftsmanship and Provenance

Crafted from solid Elm wood, the sign features deep, professional carving (chōkoku) that highlights the iconic Samurai helmet (kabuto) motif—the literal translation of the beer's name. The robust construction, hand-painted script, and visible wear on the integrated metal hanging hardware confirm its authentic use as a mobile exterior shop sign for over two decades. The sign’s substantial height (137 cm) makes it a dramatic, historical display piece that captures the spirit of Japan's rapid modernisation in the early 20th century.
