Antique Japanese Katana Dansu (Sword Chest)

This rare Katana Dansu (Sword Chest) dates to the 1850s (Late Edo Period). Designed for the secure storage of Samurai swords, this traditional low chest features a black lacquered top and a body of lightweight Paulownia wood (kiri), celebrated for its natural moisture and insect-resistant properties.

As is common for antique furniture of this age, the chest has been carefully conserved over the years, ensuring its structural integrity while allowing the beautiful, aged patina to remain. The design includes two long main drawers for blades and a smaller utility drawer. Notably, the underside of this small drawer bears a faint, illegible maker's inscription providing a fascinating, unverified mark that could indicate the original maker, a past owner, or an antique dealer's stock number. The chest is distinguished by heavy, dark iron hardware, including traditional, ornate Uchide no Kozuchi (Lucky Mallet) lock plates, lending a strong antique charm. A unique piece of 19th-century Japanese history, this Katana Dansu serves beautifully as a versatile, low-standing console or storage unit in modern interiors.
