Salt Sign (塩 - Shio)

This rustic, double-sided wooden sign, or kamban, is a powerful piece of mid-20th-century Japanese commercial history, dating from the Shōwa period (ca. 1940s–1950s). It explicitly advertises Salt (Shio / 塩) in bold, hand-painted calligraphy.

Its history is tied to the government's Salt Monopoly (Shio Sembai), which strictly regulated salt sales after 1905. A shop displaying this sign was an authorised point of sale for a vital, controlled commodity. The double-sided format and heavy, utilitarian construction (H 33 x W 37cm) ensured maximum visibility during an era of limited commercial advertising. The sign's patina, aged wood, and visible metal hooks confirm decades of authentic service. Its thick calligraphy and simple aesthetic embody the Japanese principle of Wabi-Sabi, making it a striking artefact of domestic post-war life.
