Antique Granite Jizo Bosatsu Garden Ornament
This antique stone carving features a standing Jizo Bosatsu rendered in shallow relief. Unlike the previous volcanic stones, the visual details of this piece confirm it is carved from classic Japanese granite, identifiable by its tightly packed, grey and black speckled crystalline structure. Originating from the Meiji period, the tall, subtly pointed stone is beautifully weathered from outdoor exposure, which has softly blurred the deity's facial features and introduced natural earthy patination across the granite surface.
Revered in Japan as a profoundly compassionate bodhisattva, Jizo is the traditional guardian of children, expectant mothers, firefighters, and travellers.
