Antique Basalt Pensive Buddha Garden Ornament
This antique stone carving features a seated figure in the traditional pensive posture (hanka shiyui-za), with one leg gracefully raised and a hand resting gently near the cheek. Carved from solid basalt during the Meiji period, the piece is heavily weathered from extensive outdoor exposure. The dark, vesicular surface is beautifully textured and accented by patches of natural light-coloured lichen across the front, sides, and back. In Japanese Buddhist iconography, this serene contemplative pose is traditionally associated with Nyoirin Kannon or Miroku Bosatsu, making it a highly meaningful and tranquil addition to a traditional garden setting.
