Seto-yaki
This plate is a superb example of Seto "Ishizara" (stone plate). The bold Uma-no-me (horse-eye) motif consists of six large, hand-drawn iron-oxide spirals. The centre shows six distinct spur marks, which are the scars left by small clay stilts used to stack the plates in the kiln. These are highly prized by collectors as a hallmark of authentic folk-art production.
Condition The plate exhibits a beautiful, aged patina with a fine kannyu (crackle) through the cream glaze. The underside reveals a rough, unglazed foot ring and a dark iron wash, typical of the sturdy construction required for 19th-century kitchenware.
